Active Dundee is proud to celebrate the achievement of Physical Activity Team member Darren Thomson, who has been selected to officiate at the Pajulahti 2026 World Boccia Challenger in Finland this May.

This prestigious appointment recognises Darren, who is also a Disability Sports Development Officer for Active Dundee, as one of the sport’s leading officials and highlights the growing strength of boccia development in Dundee.

Boccia in Dundee continues to flourish thanks to the dedication of Darren and the collaborative work of Active Dundee and its partners. Through his commitment and passion, Darren has helped establish:

  • Recreational boccia sessions at Douglas Sports Centre and Drumgeith Community Campus
  • A thriving Tayside Regional Squad, meeting monthly to develop future Scotland and GB athletes

Recent milestones within the regional squad include:

  • Three players recently classified
  • Two athletes selected for the Scotland Development Squad
  • One athlete chosen for the GB Transition Squad

These achievements underline the pathway Darren has helped create, from grassroots participation to national performance level.

Darren earned his international referee qualification in 2011 and was part of the Technical Officials team at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. He remains Scotland’s only International Boccia Referee, a testament to his expertise and commitment.

His influence extends far beyond officiating. Darren has played a critical role in mentoring and training the next generation of officials, helping Scottish referees build a reputation across the UK for professionalism, warmth and confidence on the national stage.

Reflecting on his selection for Pajulahti 2026, Darren said

“I am honoured to represent myself, Active Dundee and Scottish Disability Sport in Finland at the World Boccia Challenger Event and look forward to introducing new athletes to the sport and nurturing the future generations of athletes.”

Darren’s appointment is more than a personal milestone, it is a recognition of the strong boccia community in Dundee. His leadership continues to inspire athletes, volunteers and officials alike, strengthening opportunities for all and raising the city’s profile on the international stage.
