Families and young people from across Dundee are being invited to experience a free celebration of sport, activity and community when the Summer Sport Festival comes to Lochee Park on Friday 28 August.
Designed to bring sport directly into the heart of the community, the festival will give children and young people the chance to try a wide range of activities, meet local clubs and discover opportunities that could help them get active long after the summer ends.
Taking place from 3.30pm to 8pm, the festival will feature more than a dozen sports clubs and activity providers offering free taster sessions, challenges and demonstrations in a welcoming environment for all ages and abilities. Organisers are preparing for hundreds of attendees as families gather to enjoy an afternoon and evening of fun, activity and entertainment.
Visitors will have the opportunity to try activities including cycling, Gaelic football, wheelchair sport, athletics, rugby, hockey, cricket, football, tennis and basketball, while also learning more about local opportunities to stay active throughout the year.
On arrival, attendees can collect a free festival pack from the event hub and take part in a festival passport challenge, visiting activity stations across the park to collect stamps and enter a prize draw. A limited number of sports participation vouchers will also be available, helping young people take their next steps into local clubs and activities.
Food and refreshments will be available throughout the event, creating a fun festival atmosphere for families and young people spending the evening in the park.
Scott Urquhart, Head of Leisure, Sport and Physical Activity Services at Active Dundee said:
"The Summer of Sport Festival is about making it easier for young people and families to discover everything that sport and physical activity can offer.
By bringing clubs, coaches and activity providers together in one place, we're creating opportunities for young people to try something new, build confidence and connect with activities they can enjoy in the future.
We're committed to making sport as welcoming, inclusive and accessible as possible in Dundee. This festival is about removing barriers, taking opportunities directly into communities and helping more young people find a place where they can be active, make friends and develop lifelong healthy habits."
Stewart Hunter Children and Families Convener said:
“The Summer of Sport has proved to be a great success, with thousands of children and young people choosing to be active over the summer holidays and trying new sports.
It’s great to see Lochee Park being used to bring the local community, children and young people, and local sports clubs together to encourage and enable more people to try new sports and, hopefully, continue participating in them beyond the summer.
We are committed to providing opportunities for our children and young people to become more active, and I hope people will take advantage of this free festival to try something new and see what’s on offer.”
The Summer Sport Festival forms part of Dundee's Summer of Sport programme and is delivered by Active Schools and Active Dundee in partnership with Dundee City Council, local sports clubs and community organisations. The programme is supported by sportscotland through investment aimed at creating more opportunities for children and young people to experience the benefits of sport and physical activity.
The event is free to attend and no advance booking is required.
